New Horizons

New Horizons

Launch: Jan. 19, 2006 - 19:00 UTC

NASA’s New Horizons was the first spacecraft to explore Pluto and the first spacecraft to make close observations of Kuiper Belt Objects, a region of icy debris that extend far beyond the orbit of Neptune. New Horizons completed its prime mission with a close flyby of Pluto and its collection of moons in July 2015. In 2019, New Horizons flew by a rocky, snowman-shaped Kuiper Belt object, 2014 MU69, now called "Arrakoth."
